The exception “java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: There is no PasswordEncoder mapped for the id “null”” occurs if the spring boot application is enabled with security feature and password encoder is not configured for encryption. Spring boot application does not allow the password to be used as plain text. The password encoder is necessary to encrypt the password to be validated.

Root Cause

The security feature is enabled in the spring boot application in pom.xml file. The spring boot security is customized by extending WebSecurityConfigurerAdapter class. The user name and password is configured. If the user tries to login using the same user name and password, this will throw the exception. This is due to the password encoder is not configured to validate.

Spring boot application does not allow the password to be used as plain text. By default, the password encoder is necessary to encrypt the password to be validated.

How to reproduce this issue

The spring boot security dependency is added in the pom.xml as shown below. Create a spring boot security configuration class by extending WebSecurityConfigurerAdapter class. Set the user name and password as shown in the example below. The exception will be reproduced in the example below.

pom.xml

		<dependency>
			<groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
			<artifactId>spring-boot-starter-security</artifactId>
		</dependency>

SpringBootSecurityConfiguration.java

package com.yawintutor;

import org.springframework.context.annotation.Configuration;
import org.springframework.security.config.annotation.authentication.builders.AuthenticationManagerBuilder;
import org.springframework.security.config.annotation.web.builders.HttpSecurity;
import org.springframework.security.config.annotation.web.configuration.WebSecurityConfigurerAdapter;

@Configuration
public class SpringBootSecurityConfiguration extends WebSecurityConfigurerAdapter {

	@Override
	public void configure(AuthenticationManagerBuilder auth) throws Exception {
		auth.inMemoryAuthentication()
			.withUser("user").password("password").roles("USER")
			.and()
			.withUser("admin").password("password").roles("ADMIN");
	}

	@Override
	public void configure(HttpSecurity http) throws Exception {
		http
			.csrf().disable()
			.authorizeRequests()
			.antMatchers("/", "/home", "/guest").permitAll()
			.antMatchers("/admin/**").hasAnyRole("ADMIN")
			.antMatchers("/user/**").hasAnyRole("USER")
			.anyRequest().authenticated()
			.and()
			.formLogin().loginPage("/login").permitAll();
	}
}

Solution 1

The default PasswordEncoder is NoOpPasswordEncoder, which deals for plain text passwords until Spring Security 5.0. The default in Spring Security 5 is changed to DelegatingPasswordEncoder that required Password Storage Format.

The password storage format is {encrypt}password. Add {noop}, before the password. {noop} informs that password is a plain text, no encryption is used.

	@Override
	public void configure(AuthenticationManagerBuilder auth) throws Exception {
		auth.inMemoryAuthentication()
			.withUser("user").password("{noop}password").roles("USER")
			.and()
			.withUser("admin").password("{noop}password").roles("ADMIN");
	}

Solution 2

In the Password Encoder, set the default PasswordEncoder NoOpPasswordEncoder. The example below shows the default Password Encoder with NoOpPasswordEncoder.

The NoOpPasswordEncoder class is deprecated. This solution should not be used in production environment

	@Override
	public void configure(AuthenticationManagerBuilder auth) throws Exception {
		auth.inMemoryAuthentication()
			.passwordEncoder(NoOpPasswordEncoder.getInstance())
			.withUser("user").password("password").roles("USER")
			.and()
			.withUser("admin").password("password").roles("ADMIN");
	}

Solution 3

The Password Encoder is created using User.UserBuilder. UserBuilder is created using Default Password Encoder. The actual users are created using this UserBuilder object. UserDetailsService is created with these users.

This method is deprecated. Hence, it should not be used in production environment.

package com.yawintutor;

import org.springframework.context.annotation.Bean;
import org.springframework.context.annotation.Configuration;
import org.springframework.security.config.annotation.web.configuration.WebSecurityConfigurerAdapter;
import org.springframework.security.core.userdetails.User;
import org.springframework.security.core.userdetails.UserDetailsService;
import org.springframework.security.provisioning.InMemoryUserDetailsManager;

@Configuration
public class SpringBootSecurityConfiguration extends WebSecurityConfigurerAdapter {

    @Bean
    public UserDetailsService userDetailsService() {
        User.UserBuilder users = User.withDefaultPasswordEncoder();
        InMemoryUserDetailsManager mgr = new InMemoryUserDetailsManager();
        mgr.createUser(users.username("admin").password("password").roles("ADMIN").build());
        mgr.createUser(users.username("user").password("password").roles("USER").build());
        return mgr;
    }
}
