The Spring Boot MVC Controller returns a different HTTP status code compared to the intended HTTP status code in the Junit test case, then the Spring Boot Framework will throw this exception. Each status code indicates the type of the HTTP error. The issue will be resolved on the basis of the status code returned by the application server.

Root Cause

The exception is thrown due to either by the code issue or by the environment issue. The issue will be resolved on the basis of the status code returned by the application server. Check the HTTP status code manual for the description of the status code.

How to reproduce this issue

This issue can occur due to various reasons. The exact issue can be reproduced on the basis of the status code and required to create the same environment. Otherwise, reproducing this issue will be a cumbersome. In the example below, the issue is reproduced for status code 404 – “The Page not found”

package com.yawintutor;

import static org.springframework.test.web.servlet.request.MockMvcRequestBuilders.get;
import static org.springframework.test.web.servlet.result.MockMvcResultHandlers.print;
import static org.springframework.test.web.servlet.result.MockMvcResultMatchers.content;
import static org.springframework.test.web.servlet.result.MockMvcResultMatchers.jsonPath;
import static org.springframework.test.web.servlet.result.MockMvcResultMatchers.status;

import org.junit.Before;
import org.junit.Test;
import org.junit.runner.RunWith;
import org.springframework.beans.factory.annotation.Autowired;
import org.springframework.boot.test.context.SpringBootTest;
import org.springframework.test.context.junit4.SpringRunner;
import org.springframework.test.web.servlet.MockMvc;
import org.springframework.test.web.servlet.setup.MockMvcBuilders;
import org.springframework.web.context.WebApplicationContext;

@RunWith(SpringRunner.class)
@SpringBootTest
public class StudentTestController{
	@Autowired
	private WebApplicationContext webApplicationContext;

	private MockMvc mockMvc;

	@Before
	public void setup() {
		mockMvc = MockMvcBuilders.webAppContextSetup(webApplicationContext).build();
	}

	@Test
	public void testStudent() throws Exception {
		mockMvc.perform(get("/student1"))
				.andExpect(status().isOk())
				.andExpect(content().contentType("application/json"))
				.andExpect(jsonPath("$.studentId").value("1"))
				.andExpect(jsonPath("$.name1").value("student1"))
				.andExpect(jsonPath("$.age").value(30));
	}
}

Solution 1

In Junit test case, add the code “.andDo(print())” and run the test case again, this will print the json response, check the HTTP status code of the response. The example below shows the HTTP status code of response.

package com.yawintutor;

import static org.springframework.test.web.servlet.request.MockMvcRequestBuilders.get;
import static org.springframework.test.web.servlet.result.MockMvcResultHandlers.print;
import static org.springframework.test.web.servlet.result.MockMvcResultMatchers.content;
import static org.springframework.test.web.servlet.result.MockMvcResultMatchers.jsonPath;
import static org.springframework.test.web.servlet.result.MockMvcResultMatchers.status;

import org.junit.Before;
import org.junit.Test;
import org.junit.runner.RunWith;
import org.springframework.beans.factory.annotation.Autowired;
import org.springframework.boot.test.context.SpringBootTest;
import org.springframework.test.context.junit4.SpringRunner;
import org.springframework.test.web.servlet.MockMvc;
import org.springframework.test.web.servlet.setup.MockMvcBuilders;
import org.springframework.web.context.WebApplicationContext;

@RunWith(SpringRunner.class)
@SpringBootTest
public class StudentTestController{
	@Autowired
	private WebApplicationContext webApplicationContext;

	private MockMvc mockMvc;

	@Before
	public void setup() {
		mockMvc = MockMvcBuilders.webAppContextSetup(webApplicationContext).build();
	}

	@Test
	public void testStudent() throws Exception {
		mockMvc.perform(get("/student1"))
				.andDo(print())
				.andExpect(status().isOk())
				.andExpect(content().contentType("application/json"))
				.andExpect(jsonPath("$.studentId").value("1"))
				.andExpect(jsonPath("$.name1").value("student1"))
				.andExpect(jsonPath("$.age").value(30));
	}
}

The status will show as like below

FlashMap:
       Attributes = null

MockHttpServletResponse:
           Status = 404
    Error message = null
          Headers = []
     Content type = null
             Body =
    Forwarded URL = null
   Redirected URL = null
          Cookies = []
